We missed this story a couple of days ago when it was published.
When the military is on top its tentacles work their way into all kinds of arenas where they doesn’t belong. Of course under a junta that has crushed opposition, lies with impunity and gets away with corruption and murder, the collective military mind is that they are superhuman and belong everywhere!
Such is the case when The Dictator and self-appointed Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha “has ordered military officers nation-wide to work with provincial authorities to help solve problems of informal debts, especially among farmers…”.
This seems quite odd for several reasons. For one, the military are not bankers. But then some of them are loan sharks or protect loan sharks.
The report claims that those with an “informal debt problem” should report it to the “Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and the Government Savings Bank (GSB).”
Following that, “military officers will invite both the creditors and debtors to meet to explore compromises.”
So the thinking here is that the military officers are going to be the junta’s muscle in forcing “compromises.” Of course, the military is now so embedded in provincial issues as thugs and “sheriffs” that there will be few who will refuse their offers.
If that sounds like the mafia at work, that seems to be the model being used.
