Last week, a report from several NGOs stated that the since the May 2014 coup, the military junta had arrested 100 persons on lese majeste charges.
We think this figure is too low. A quick tally of our data, posted at the site, shows 57 lese majeste convictions under the junta and another 94 arrests (there’s no overlap between the two groups).
We think our data is actually on the low side, so we consider the “100 arrests” is way too low.
The lese majeste regime of repression and censorship has certainly been helped along by various palace purges by Prince, now King, Vajiralongkorn. He has lese majeste widely used against those he dislikes. Leave his cases aside, and the figure gets to around 110.
