Lese majeste prisoners hospitalized

Prachatai reports that the state authorities, apparently worried by the reaction to the death of lese majeste convict Ampol Tangnopakul, have moved two sick lese majeste victims to hospital.

Surachai Danwatthananusorn is reportedly hospitalized since 17 May “with high blood pressure and a swollen prostate, resulting in fatigue and loss of appetite…”.

His wife, Pranee reported that Surachai:

was sent to hospital the day after she attended a meeting held by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs where she argued that the medical facilities at the Bangkok Remand Prison did not have doctors on duty on a regular basis as claimed by the Corrections Department.

It seems that doctors:

have decided to operate on Surachai’s prostate gland, but he asked to have it postponed until after 28 May when he will hear the court verdict on one of his lèse majesté cases in which he has pleaded guilty.

As a rather old man now, Surachai’s health problems have been known since his jailing on 22 February 2011.

Meanwhile,  lese majeste convict Darunee Charnchoensilpakul has been:

sent from the Central Women’s Correctional Institute to the Police Hospital for a medical examination in preparation for an operation to treat her molar problem, which has deteriorated and left her unable to open her mouth more than slightly.

Darunee wants bail in order to get good medical treatment for this major operation which may require a long period of recuperation.

Her case is especially revealing of the continual persecution of prisoners held on lese majeste charges by the judiciary and prison system. Repeatedly refused bail, Darunee’s health problem has been since her very first bail application back in 2008! In other words, she has received poor treatment and her affliction is now very serious. This amounts to further punishment and torture of a prisoner.
